SDG Systems Updates Linux-based Recon®

Print PDF

Cranberry Township, PA – September 18, 2006 – SDG Systems, LLC today announced
the general availability and support of the Recon X-Series rugged mobile hand-held
computer running the Linux® operating system. SDG Systems will market and sell the
Linux-based Recon X-Series, providing technical and warranty support. The Recon X-
Series extends the options previously provided by the Recon with integrated 802.11a/b/g
and Bluetooth® wireless technology.

“With the addition of integrated 802.11 and Bluetooth technology, the Recon X-Series
greatly increases the number of possible applications,” said Todd Blumer, President of
SDG Systems. “The integration frees up the dual CompactFlash® slots to more easily
accommodate GPS, barcode scanning, GPRS and other peripherals or storage. Some of our
customers are already taking advantage of the new features of the Recon X-Series in
demanding outdoor environments.”

Like the original Recon, the Recon X-Series meets the MIL-STD-810F military standard
for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. It also has an IP67 rating, meaning it's
impervious to water and dust. The Recon is designed for all-day operation in extreme
outdoor and industrial environments.

SDG Systems also announced the ability to provide custom Qtopia or GPE builds. Todd
Blumer added, “Many of our customers require the ability to add or remove applications
from the standard builds. We offer the tools and training for these customers to develop
their own installation image. Like the Linux operating system, we want to remain open
and flexible in addressing our customer's needs.”

The Linux-based Recon X-Series utilizes version 2.6.15 of the Linux kernel. Its user
interface is based on Qtopia PDA Edition, version 2.1.2, which SDG Systems has
enhanced to manage the integrated Bluetooth and 802.11 technology. The operating
system utilities are based on the Familiar Linux distribution, version 0.8.4.
